Why Putting Up Holiday Decorations Early Could Make Us Feel Happier

Ediția Decembrie 2021 Dec 20, 2021

I think we all know at least one person who starts decorating their house for holidays more than 3 weeks before their arrival. We probably tend to judge those who decorate their homes earlier for the winter holidays, but what we don't know is that they might be happier than we are because of these activities.

Why do people decorate their homes for Christmas and holidays in general?!

Besides the fact that almost every activity of decorating has its origins in the past, having strong meanings, people also do it for the good energy and joy.

Decorating for the holidays (even when we don’t feel like it) might be really good for our well-being. Stringing lights, placing themed objects around the house, buying a Christmas tree and decorating could make us happier. Holiday decorations could even improve our social life, because it makes us have better energy, thus becoming more sociable, more confident and much friendlier.

There is something absolutely magical about Christmas and the holidays in general, but that is not what we are talking about today. The idea is that during Christmas we all tend to be better, kind, generous, satisfied and happy, and for that there is not necessarily a clear explanation. The holiday season has the power to take us back in time and brings us (most of the time) a lot of beautiful memories, which using our imagination we can relive in one way or another. The holidays stir up nostalgic feelings like no other time of the year.

When we look at an ornament that we have had since we were little, we may remember the magic that we felt when we were children and we were waiting for Santa Claus. Or, when our parents turn on the Christmas lights in the house, we might remember what they looked like in the past. Even when we start decorating the Christmas tree with family or friends, we can be overwhelmed by an emotional feeling, because it is quite possible that we will be struck by memories and that we will have a strong desire to make new ones.

Even Gillian Mandich, the founder of the International Happiness Institute of Health Science Research, claims that festive colours and bright lights spark a chemical reaction in our brains that make us happier. He said that “Dopamine is a feel-good hormone and when we see bright lights and colourful decorations we can actually see an increase of that hormone in the body.”

In addition, there is a color therapy called chromotherapy, a treatment that uses light to affect our mood. So there has to be a connection between lights, decorations and colors, as a result of which we can increase our energy level and happiness.

We always feel the need to get out of monotony and do something special every day. So anything that can take us out of our daily routine is welcomed. People who decorate their homes earlier, get out of this monotony earlier, being able to enjoy it every day. For example, after decorating the house, these people will wake up every morning and notice that in the living room, there is not only the sofa and the TV, but also a big colorful Christmas tree and a lot of other themed objects. So won't these people be happier at work or school, compared to those who have nothing new in the house, but only count (with enthusiasm or not) the days left until Christmas?!

If  you're thinking of skipping the decorating this year because you're too "rebellious" or too grown up, or you're planning to throw a few decorations at the last second, you may want to rethink that strategy. Let me tell you a secret, putting up holiday decorations has no age, nor does the happiness and well-being that returns to us after decorating the whole house.

So what are you waiting for ?! Run to decorate for Christmas, because there are only 5 days left !!
